Man Hospitalized After Attempted Robbery at McDonald’s on the West Side
CHICAGO — A man who attempted to rob a customer at gunpoint inside a McDonald’s on the West Side found himself hospitalized after patrons of the restaurant intervened and subdued him until Chicago police arrived, according to officials. Shockingly, prosecutors revealed that this was the second time in ten days that the same gunman had targeted the same victim inside the same establishment.
The initial robbery took place on November 13 at the McDonald’s located at 5153 West Chicago Avenue. Prosecutors stated that Ahmod Johnson, 21, entered the restaurant and threatened a 46-year-old man with a gun, demanding the victim’s belongings.
Johnson proceeded to assault the victim and forced him to remove his pants before fleeing with the man’s phone, wallet, and $500 in cash, as detailed in the state’s detention petition.
Approximately ten days later, on November 23 around 5:30 p.m., Johnson returned to the same McDonald’s, brandished a loaded handgun at the same victim, and stole his cash, according to the petition.
However, this time the outcome was different. Johnson was tackled, subdued, and beaten by unidentified bystanders until law enforcement arrived, as per a CPD report.
Upon arrival, officers found Johnson on the ground with a group of individuals holding him down and striking him in the head. The police detained Johnson, recovered a firearm and extended magazine from his possession, and dispersed the crowd to prevent further harm to the offender, as documented in the police report that was backed by surveillance footage.
Johnson, who sustained injuries to his head and mouth and complained of abdominal pain, was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in fair condition, as indicated in the report.
Judge Susana Ortiz approved the state’s detention petition, leading to Johnson’s incarceration pending trial on two counts of armed robbery.
