Robert Brandt, left, and Ronald Wembley (Chicago Police Department)

Man with History of Murder Conviction Accused of Kidnapping and Carjacking

In a shocking turn of events, Robert Brandt, who served two decades in prison for his involvement in the murder of a Chicago police officer, is back in court facing new charges. This time, Brandt is accused of teaming up with another convicted murderer, Ronald Wembley, to commit a violent crime in Brighton Park last summer.

Brandt’s criminal history dates back to 2001 when he pleaded guilty to a murder charge related to the killing of Chicago Police Officer Michael Ceriale. Now, he stands accused of participating in a harrowing incident where a couple was zip-tied, kidnapped, and carjacked, with one victim resorting to jumping from the moving vehicle to escape.

Wembley, Brandt’s alleged accomplice, is no stranger to the criminal justice system either, having received a 45-year sentence for a previous murder conviction. Prosecutors detailed how the pair allegedly carried out the carjacking, which left the female victim with severe injuries after her daring escape.

Investigators were able to link Wembley to the crime scene through phone data and GPS records, as well as visual evidence that matched his driver’s license photo. Brandt, on the other hand, faces charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated kidnapping, and kidnapping while armed, with prosecutors set to present specific allegations against him in court.

Despite completing his prison sentence for Ceriale’s murder, Brandt has faced additional charges related to firearm possession and violent offender registration violations in recent years. The legal proceedings surrounding Brandt and Wembley’s case highlight the complexities of the criminal justice system and the challenges of rehabilitation for individuals with violent pasts.
