The White House has announced that more than 330 illegal immigrants who were arrested during the recent riots in Los Angeles will be deported from the United States. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that out of those arrested, 113 individuals had prior criminal convictions.
During a press conference on June 11, Leavitt stated that a total of 157 people, including illegal immigrants and U.S. citizens, have been arrested for assault and obstruction-related charges in connection with the riots. The Department of Justice (DOJ) also reported that two individuals were arrested for throwing Molotov cocktails at officers during the civil unrest in downtown Los Angeles.
One of the arrested individuals, Emiliano Garduno Galvez, a Mexican national, had previously been deported and has a criminal record that includes convictions for driving under the influence and grand theft. Another individual, Wrackkie Quiogue, was also arrested for throwing Molotov cocktails at officers during the riots.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli emphasized that possessing a Molotov cocktail or any other destructive device could result in up to 10 years of federal prison time. He condemned the violent attacks against law enforcement officers and innocent bystanders during the civil unrest.
The DOJ is currently reviewing FBI video footage, body camera footage, and social media evidence to identify and charge more individuals involved in the riots. Leavitt also raised concerns about the funding of agitators in Los Angeles, suggesting that an unknown source may be financing the unrest.
President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles to address the ongoing rioting. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have come under scrutiny for their response to the situation, with Trump accusing them of delaying action.
Despite legal challenges from California officials, a judge ruled against issuing a temporary restraining order to block Trump’s military deployment. Newsom has criticized Trump for federal overreach and lack of consultation regarding the deployment of the National Guard.
In addition to the arrests related to the riots, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that nine individuals with prior criminal convictions, including one for homicide and burglary, were arrested by immigration authorities in Los Angeles. The DHS highlighted the importance of addressing criminal activity among illegal immigrants in the country.
