Man Charged with Attempted Murder after Paralyzing Victim in West Side Shooting
Prosecutors have officially filed charges against Jacob Riley, an 18-year-old from Bellwood, for allegedly shooting and paralyzing another man in a West Side alley over the weekend. The incident unfolded in broad daylight, with a veteran Chicago police officer witnessing the crime from just yards away.
The officer, with nearly 33 years of experience on the force, immediately sprang into action and apprehended Riley within minutes of the shooting. Riley now faces charges of attempted murder.
According to reports, the officer, aged 57, radioed in the incident after witnessing the shooting in an alley behind the 200 block of South Cicero. Riley had shot an 18-year-old man in the back, causing him to collapse on the pavement. The officer recounted seeing Riley approach the victim and fire another shot at close range.
The victim, a resident of Old Town, sustained two gunshot wounds to his back, a graze wound to his head, and a broken left arm from the attack. One of the bullets struck his spine, resulting in paralysis. During Riley’s detention hearing, prosecutors detailed the extent of the victim’s injuries.
Following the shooting, the officer swiftly arrested Riley in an alley behind the 4800 block of West Jackson. Authorities recovered a chrome 9-millimeter handgun from the scene, with the weapon indicating that all bullets had been discharged.
At the detention hearing, Judge Antara Rivera ordered Riley to be held in custody as the legal proceedings unfold.
