UnitedHealth Group, the largest health care company in the U.S., is on a mission to expand even further. In 2024, the conglomerate made significant moves by acquiring or establishing over 250 subsidiaries. While most of these transactions were not publicly disclosed due to their relative size compared to UnitedHealth’s vast operations, the company’s focus on growth is evident.

One of the key areas of focus for UnitedHealth in 2024 was outpatient surgery centers. The company took full or partial ownership stakes in more than 100 surgery centers during the year. These centers offer a range of highly profitable services, including heart cath labs, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, and gastroenterology. Notably, UnitedHealth entered into a joint venture with Texas Health Resources, a nonprofit hospital system in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which generated $6 billion in revenue the previous year.

The strategic acquisition of outpatient surgery centers aligns with UnitedHealth’s overall goal of providing comprehensive and convenient health care services to its customers. By expanding its presence in this sector, the company aims to enhance its capabilities in delivering specialized medical procedures outside of traditional hospital settings.

While the specifics of many of these transactions remain undisclosed, UnitedHealth’s aggressive expansion in the outpatient surgery center space underscores its commitment to diversifying its portfolio and meeting the evolving needs of the healthcare market. With a strong focus on growth and innovation, UnitedHealth Group continues to solidify its position as a leader in the healthcare industry.

As UnitedHealth Group continues to expand its reach and capabilities, it is poised to shape the future of healthcare delivery in the U.S. The company’s strategic investments and acquisitions in outpatient surgery centers demonstrate its commitment to providing high-quality, accessible care to patients across the country. With a focus on innovation and patient-centered solutions, UnitedHealth Group is well-positioned to drive positive change in the healthcare landscape.
