Two 14-year-old boys have been charged with a violent armed carjacking that took place in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, highlighting the concerning trend of youth violence in the city. The incident occurred on June 10 at around 4:15 a.m. in the 1700 block of West Peterson Avenue.
According to Chicago police, the two teens, who are not old enough to legally drive, were part of a group of four individuals who orchestrated the attack. The group arrived in a white sedan and used the vehicle to strike the 39-year-old victim. Armed with at least one firearm, they proceeded to steal the man’s belongings before fleeing in his blue Toyota Highlander. The victim sustained critical injuries and was rushed to St. Francis Hospital for treatment.
One of the teenage suspects was apprehended on July 1, while the second was arrested on July 7. Both boys have been charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. Additionally, one of the teens faces an extra charge of unlawful possession of a weapon. The other two individuals involved in the carjacking are still at large.
Due to their age, the identities of the two boys and further details of the crime have been kept confidential under Illinois’ juvenile court laws. The severity of the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges posed by youth violence in the city.
