Police Shootout with House Robbery Syndicate in Sandton
Authorities in Sandton engaged in a fierce gun battle with a notorious house robbery syndicate, resulting in the fatal shooting of three suspects. The incident took place on the N1 freeway in Sandton, leading to the closure of the N1 North between Winnie Mandela Drive and Rivonia Road.
According to Police Colonel Mavela Masondo, the shootout occurred after receiving information about the suspects who had just committed a house robbery in Randburg. The suspects had stolen several household appliances, including the homeowner’s Volkswagen Polo.
“Police from Gauteng Highway Patrol, together with Gauteng Traffic Airwing and Cap Security, pursued the suspects on the N1 Highway. The suspects opened fire on the police, triggering a fierce gun battle. Three suspects were fatally wounded, while the fourth suspect, attempting to flee in the stolen car, was apprehended,” Masondo explained.
Suspected Syndicate Involvement
Authorities recovered two firearms and the stolen appliances, linking the suspects to a larger house robbery syndicate operating in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. The arrested suspects are facing charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, house robbery, and possession of stolen property.
Cash-in-Transit Heist Foiled in Tshwane
In a separate incident, police thwarted a cash-in-transit heist in Tshwane and arrested five suspects aged between 35 and 50. The suspects allegedly rammed a CIT truck with a BMW, bombed the van, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in multiple vehicles.
“The swift response from Gauteng Highway Patrol led to the apprehension of the suspects after a high-speed chase. Preliminary investigations revealed that these suspects were previously involved in CIT robberies in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo Provinces,” Masondo stated.
Authorities are currently searching for six additional suspects linked to the CIT heist.
