Police in Gauteng have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against crime with the arrest of four men who were found in possession of high-calibre weapons. The suspects were apprehended on Tuesday at the Gosforth Toll Gate on the N17 highway.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a multidisciplinary law enforcement team received information about a group of men who were allegedly on their way to commit a robbery in Johannesburg. The team followed two suspected vehicles from Wadeville until they intercepted them at the toll gate. Upon searching the vehicles, three rifles with magazines and ammunition were recovered. It was also discovered that one of the vehicles, a Lexus, had false registration plates and was stolen. Both vehicles used by the suspects were seized by authorities.

Deputy Provincial Police Major-General Fred Kekana commended the team for their efforts in combating crime in the province. The arrested suspects are set to face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in court.

In a separate incident, four foreign nationals were arrested after allegedly shooting and injuring a man on the East Rand. The shooting occurred during a community-led initiative to close down foreign-owned spaza shops in the area. The victim was wounded in the right hand and right upper leg and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The four suspects found inside the shop were taken into custody and are expected to face charges of attempted murder.

These arrests come at a time when the country is grappling with incidents of violence and health risks associated with food sold at spaza shops. The authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all residents in the province.
