The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited have achieved a remarkable feat in reducing normal gas flaring by 96% at the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) fields. This accomplishment marks a significant step towards environmental sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

According to a statement released by NNPCL, the milestone was reached at the Madu field, located offshore Bayelsa State, through a gas reinjection strategy in alignment with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. By safely storing gas that would have otherwise been flared in a designated subsurface reservoir, the initiative has effectively minimized the environmental impact.

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., commended the achievement, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management. Kyari highlighted the importance of adhering to international norms and best practices for the environment to meet energy demands while promoting sustainability objectives.

Similarly, Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, the Managing Director and CEO of First E&P, reiterated the company’s dedication to environmental sustainability and responsible energy production. By significantly reducing their carbon footprint, the organization is contributing to a sustainable energy future that benefits both communities and the environment.

The joint effort by NNPCL and First E&P not only aligns with international best practices but also reinforces their commitment to meeting national environmental regulations set forth by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Legal Commission. This collaborative approach showcases a proactive stance towards environmental protection and underscores the importance of prudent resource management in the oil and gas industry.

Overall, the successful reduction of gas flaring at the Anyala and Madu fields demonstrates a proactive and responsible approach to environmental stewardship, setting a positive example for the industry as a whole. The commitment to sustainability exhibited by both companies serves as a testament to their dedication to creating a greener and more sustainable energy future for Nigeria and beyond.
