Meta, the parent company of popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is rumored to be developing its own AI-powered search engine. With the search engine market being a lucrative industry generating billions of dollars in revenue, Meta’s entry into this space could potentially disrupt the dominance of established giants like Google and Bing.

While specific details about Meta’s search engine are still scarce, it is said to operate similarly to other AI-powered search engines like Perplexity AI. Perplexity AI distinguishes itself by gathering information from multiple news sources and engaging in a conversational format with users, offering a more interactive and dynamic search experience.

Meta’s advantage lies in its extensive user reach through its social media platforms. Users may be able to access the search engine directly from Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp, making it highly accessible. Reports from The Information and the detection of AI crawlers labeled as Meta-External Agent and Meta-ExternalFetcher further suggest Meta’s efforts in developing its search engine by collecting publicly available data for training its AI.

This initiative could pose a significant challenge to Google, which currently dominates the search engine market with a reported 90% market share. Other tech giants like Apple and OpenAI are also exploring the development of their own AI-powered search engines, intensifying the competition in the industry.

As more companies seek to either compete with or distance themselves from Google, the search engine market may witness a shift in dynamics. The emergence of new competitors like Meta could lead to increased competition and innovation, ultimately reshaping how users access information online.

The launch of Meta’s AI-powered search engine will be closely monitored to see if it can challenge Google’s dominance. It remains to be seen whether Google can maintain its market share or if it will start losing ground to emerging competitors like Meta and others. The evolving landscape of the search engine market promises exciting developments and advancements in the near future.
