The ongoing civil conflict in Sudan has attracted a complex web of external actors, including Russian and Ukrainian fighters who are both reportedly training the Sudanese Armed Forces. Retired pilots from Ukraine and snipers from Russia have been assisting General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s forces, adding to the already convoluted dynamics of the 17-month war.
On the other side, the Rapid Support Forces led by warlord Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeti, have allegedly deployed mercenaries from countries such as Chad, the Central African Republic, and Libya. The involvement of these foreign fighters highlights the scramble for resources and strategic positioning in Sudan, a country rich in gold production and boasting a valuable Red Sea coastline.
Russia, in particular, has been actively expanding its military presence in Africa, with the Africa Corps taking over from the infamous Wagner private military group. Moscow’s alliances in Sudan initially seemed ambiguous due to past dealings with Hemeti, but recent developments suggest a leaning towards supporting Burhan and the Sudanese army.
Reports indicate that weapons from various countries, including Iran, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates, are flowing into Sudan, fueling the conflict further. The UN Security Council recently extended sanctions against Sudan, including an arms embargo, underscoring the international community’s concerns about the situation.
The involvement of external actors like Russia, Ukraine, and the UAE has complicated efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan. US special envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, has called on all parties to cease their support for the warring factions, emphasizing the need to stop external actors from exacerbating the crisis.
As the conflict in Sudan continues to escalate, the presence of foreign fighters and the influx of weapons from various countries only serve to prolong the suffering of the Sudanese people. The international community must work together to address the root causes of the conflict and support efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution in the region.
