Donovan George, a 40-year-old man, has been accused of burglarizing units at a Northwest Side storage facility multiple times this year. Prosecutors claim that George targeted the Life Storage complex at 6603 West Diversey on four separate occasions in January and February. Surveillance video footage reportedly helped identify him as the suspect in these break-ins.
Interestingly, George was already on pretrial release for allegedly burglarizing a storage unit in Melrose Park last year. In that incident, he reportedly stole between 15 and 25 bottles of wine valued at $1,200 to $1,500. Despite being out on pretrial release, George found himself back in legal trouble due to the recent string of burglaries at the Life Storage facility.
Judge Rivanda Doss Beal made the decision to detain George for violating his pretrial release conditions. He now faces four new counts of burglary in connection with the storage facility break-ins, as well as a misdemeanor charge for possessing burglary tools, specifically a crowbar.
The case against George serves as a reminder of the importance of security measures at storage facilities and the consequences of engaging in criminal activities. It also highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in identifying and apprehending repeat offenders.
