In a recent operation conducted by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police, a cash-in-transit heist was successfully foiled, resulting in the death of two suspects in a shootout. The incident took place in the Sinyameni area under the Msinga policing precinct on Thursday night.

According to Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker, the operation was a result of multi-disciplinary intelligence-led efforts. Two other men in their forties were arrested for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as attempted murder, following the thwarted CIT robbery.

The police received intelligence about the planned heist on the evening of Thursday, 3 July 2025. An operation was immediately activated, with law enforcement officers deployed to monitor and patrol the identified area. A Mercedes-Benz vehicle with four occupants was spotted and tactically approached by the police.

As the officers approached the vehicle, they came under fire from the suspects, leading to a shootout. Two suspects were fatally wounded, while the other two were apprehended. Two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered from the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the arrested men was a former employee of a private security company.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Msinga Magistrate’s Court soon, as investigations into the incident are ongoing.

This successful operation adds to a series of recent incidents in KZN where police have been engaged in gun battles with suspects. Last month, five suspects were shot and killed in two separate incidents in Inanda. In one incident, a wanted suspect opened fire at officers and was fatally wounded during a shootout. In another incident, suspects wanted for murder, attempted murder, and house robberies were apprehended by the police.

The efforts of the KZN police in combating crime and ensuring the safety of the community are commendable. The ongoing operations and intelligence-led initiatives are crucial in preventing criminal activities and apprehending those involved in illegal acts. The dedication and bravery of law enforcement officers in these operations are essential in maintaining law and order in the region.
