The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently presented its 2024 Annual Report to the Standing Committee on Programmes and Finance (SCPF) in Geneva. Alongside the report, IOM launched a global Resilience Campaign, urging Member States to contribute USD 100 million in flexible funding to support its core humanitarian operations and provide essential assistance to people on the move.
IOM Director General Amy Pope emphasized the importance of sustaining the organization’s impact in the face of escalating crises and limited resources. The 2024 Annual Report highlighted that IOM assisted over 26.4 million individuals in 186 countries, delivering life-saving aid, promoting solutions to displacement, facilitating safe migration, and supporting recovery efforts.
The Resilience Campaign, titled “From Reform to Resilience: Securing What We Built Together,” aims to address potential shortfalls in Operational Support Income, which funds critical systems like global data tools that inform humanitarian response plans. With only five percent of IOM’s total income coming from flexible sources, the organization’s ability to maintain these services is at risk.
In response, IOM is calling on donors and Member States to provide 5 to 10 percent of their existing contributions as flexible funding. This support enables IOM to respond swiftly in crises, assist the most vulnerable populations, and ensure institutional stability.
In 2024, IOM implemented structural realignment measures to enhance efficiency, reallocating resources to the field and reducing institutional costs. These efforts generated savings of USD 38 million and allowed IOM to provide emergency health assistance to over 6.2 million people, protection services to nearly 3 million individuals, and mental health support to 1.5 million migrants.
Additionally, IOM supported the safe relocation of thousands of individuals in fragile and conflict-affected regions, provided recovery aid to 2.8 million people, and assisted almost 900,000 individuals affected by climate-related disasters. The organization also facilitated safe migration pathways in collaboration with 145 governments and expanded corporate partnerships to reach over one million individuals.
The 2024 Annual Report underscores the scale of IOM’s global operations and highlights the need for sustained, flexible funding to continue these efforts. The Resilience Campaign serves as a call for solidarity and action to ensure that IOM can remain responsive and effective in assisting those in need.
