Ghanaian sensation Black Sherif has recently been nominated in the Best International Act category at the prestigious 2025 BET Awards, showcasing his remarkable rise to international fame. Competing against a diverse array of global talent including Tyla from South Africa, Rema and Ayra Starr from Nigeria, as well as artists from Brazil, the UK, Eswatini, and France, Black Sherif’s nomination highlights his growing presence on the global music scene.

The announcement of the full list of nominees on 8 May has generated significant buzz leading up to the main awards ceremony scheduled for 9 June. Notably, American rapper Kendrick Lamar leads this year’s nominations with over 10 nods, including Video of the Year for his track “Not Like Us” and Album of the Year for “GNX.”

Black Sherif’s nomination not only underscores his individual talent but also marks a significant moment for Ghana on the BET Awards stage. Past Ghanaian nominees in various categories have included music icons such as Kojo Antwi, D Black, Sarkodie, R2Bees, Stonebwoy, Fuse ODG, Kwesi Arthur, MzVee, and Camidoh, showcasing the country’s rich musical heritage.

While this is Black Sherif’s first appearance in the main BET Awards ceremony, he previously secured a BET Hip Hop Award nomination in 2023, which he went on to win—an achievement that solidified his position as one of Africa’s emerging music stars. His latest album “Iron Boy” has been met with critical acclaim, topping streaming charts and reaffirming his influence in both local and international music scenes.

Ghanaian media personality Ebenezer Donkoh (NYDJ) emphasized the historic significance of Black Sherif’s nomination, noting that he is the first Ghanaian artist to receive a nomination in the rebranded Best International Act category since BET merged the ‘Best International Act: Africa’ and ‘Best International Act: UK’ awards in 2018. This recognition not only celebrates Black Sherif’s artistic prowess and dedication but also shines a spotlight on Ghana’s vibrant music industry on the global stage.
