Leader of NPP Caucus Reacts to Speaker Bagbin’s Rejection of Emergency Parliamentary Sitting
After Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s decision to reject the request for an emergency parliamentary sitting, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Leader of the NPP Caucus in Parliament, has responded. He emphasized that he cannot compel the Speaker to reconvene the House for such a sitting.
Afenyo-Markin had sent a letter on 22nd November requesting the Speaker to reconvene Parliament on 28th and 29th November to discuss six key government issues and 17 pending bills. However, Speaker Bagbin formally responded on 26th November, declining the request. He cited the proximity of the proposed dates to the general election and the impracticality of addressing extensive business in just two days as reasons for his decision.
In an interview with Joy News, Afenyo-Markin shared his thoughts on the matter, stating, “I cannot force him. I would use constitutional means. If he shuts the door, it’s up to him.” He also highlighted the importance of focusing on the upcoming elections to secure a strong majority in the next parliament.
Afenyo-Markin urged party supporters to remain united and vote to ensure the NPP’s position as the clear majority caucus in the next parliament. This, he believes, will help prevent future stalemates and enable the implementation of important policies.
