President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his commitment to combating corruption and streamlining the public sector to spur the country’s development. In a recent interview with Germany-based DW TV, Mahama outlined his administration’s plans to implement bold reforms aimed at improving governance, enhancing accountability, and reducing inefficiencies in public institutions.

Mahama acknowledged the widespread discontent among the public regarding poor resource management, governance deficiencies, and escalating debt levels in the country. He identified corruption and inefficiency as major obstacles hindering national progress, emphasizing the necessity for systemic changes to achieve economic stability and good governance.

One of the primary focuses of Mahama’s agenda is constitutional reform. He emphasized the importance of revisiting the constitution to create a more dynamic framework that aligns with contemporary governance practices. Mahama stated, “One of the first things we will do would be to take the whole issue of constitutional review again and see how we can structure things so that we have a more dynamic constitution going forward.”

Furthermore, Mahama highlighted the urgency of addressing corruption and wasteful practices within the public sector. He emphasized the need to enhance the governance system to prevent excessive waste due to corrupt activities. Mahama stated, “And so how do we improve our governance system so that we are not having so much waste as a result of corruption and waste? So that is something that we need to look at to ensure our economic managers can manage it in such a way that we don’t end up where we have found ourselves at this time in terms of debt management.”

Mahama stressed the importance of implementing measures that hold public officials accountable and impose strict penalties for corrupt behavior. He believes that these changes will improve the efficiency of Ghana’s governance system and rebuild public trust. By prioritizing constitutional reforms and taking a firm stance against corruption, Mahama aims to establish a governance structure that promotes transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline.

Ultimately, Mahama’s goal is to create a more transparent and efficient public sector that drives Ghana’s progress. He believes that by enforcing stringent measures against corruption and instigating constitutional reforms, Ghana can build a stronger foundation for sustainable development.
