Two More Suspects Arrested in Connection with Blue Light Robberies

In a significant breakthrough, Gauteng police have apprehended two additional suspects believed to be involved in more than 30 hijackings on the N3 highway, specifically between Villiers and the De Hoek toll gate. This recent development brings the total number of arrests to four, including two police officers.

The arrests were made by a joint operation involving officers from Gauteng crime intelligence, the provincial investigative unit, highway patrol, and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC). The suspects, including the two police officers, were allegedly linked to a series of blue light robberies where unsuspecting motorists were targeted by individuals posing as law enforcement officers.

Items Seized During the Operation

During the operation, law enforcement officials seized several items believed to be connected to the hijackings. These items included two unlicensed firearms with ammunition, a military-grade signal jammer, SAPS insignia and uniforms, blue lights and sirens fitted to the suspects’ vehicle, and false registration numbers.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a police spokesperson, stated that the suspects employed dangerous and deceptive methods to carry out their criminal activities, posing a significant threat to motorists using the highway.

Link to Previous Hijackings

All four suspects, including the police officers, have also been linked to two cases of truck hijacking and carjacking in Kempton Park. The arrests have been welcomed by Gauteng provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni, who commended the team for their dedication in apprehending those who violate the law.

Mthombeni expressed disappointment in the involvement of police officers in criminal activities, emphasizing the importance of upholding the law and ensuring that those who betray public trust face consequences for their actions.

Motorists have been advised to exercise caution when traveling on the R23 between Heidelberg and Balfour, where hijacking incidents have been on the rise, especially during the evening hours. Investigations into the incidents are ongoing, with authorities working diligently to ensure the safety of all road users.

The recent arrests serve as a reminder that law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing those involved in criminal activities, regardless of their affiliation. The collaboration between various units demonstrates a commitment to maintaining public safety and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
