Cross-border operation uncovers clandestine drug lab producing Mandrax in Vanderbijlpark
Gauteng police have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking by uncovering a drug lab worth R1.5 million in Vanderbijlpark. The operation led to the arrest of a 46-year-old suspect.
The discovery was made possible through a cross-border operation between the Western Cape Organised Crime Investigation (OCI) and the Head Office Narcotics. During the operation, Mandrax and drug manufacturing equipment were seized, highlighting the scale of the illegal operation.
Intensive investigations lead to the bust
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the bust was the result of intensive investigations conducted by a multidisciplinary team and various law enforcement officials. The team had been tracking a suspect wanted for drug dealing in De Rust, Western Cape, which eventually led them to an address in South Crest, Alberton.
During the search of the suspect’s premises and vehicle, officers uncovered an unlicensed firearm and over 7,000 Mandrax tablets with a value exceeding R560,000. This initial discovery paved the way for further investigations that ultimately led to the clandestine drug laboratory in Vanderbijlpark.
Drug lab uncovered in Vanderbijlpark
Further investigations following the initial bust led the team to a property in Vanderbijlpark, where they uncovered a fully operational drug laboratory. The seized items included a tablet press, various chemicals, drug manufacturing equipment, and a quantity of Mandrax powder and tablets valued at R500,000.
The suspect is set to appear in court next week to face charges of possession, dealing, and manufacturing of drugs. Van Wyk emphasized that the investigations are ongoing, indicating a continued effort to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
Recent success in combating drug syndicates
This recent success in uncovering the clandestine drug lab comes on the heels of another breakthrough where the police arrested six suspects in connection with a drug syndicate on 11 February 2025. The investigations into the syndicate’s activities led to the discovery of a significant quantity of scheduled medicine, steroids, and performance-enhancing drugs at a self-storage facility in Derdepoort, Pretoria.
The estimated street value of the confiscated substances was R15 million, underscoring the magnitude of the operation. Preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate was operating an online platform to trade and distribute illicit substances to consumers.
