Writer, a leading full-stack generative AI platform, has announced the launch of its latest large language model (LLM) called Palmyra X 004. This new model represents a significant advancement in enterprise artificial intelligence, particularly excelling in function calling and workflow execution – essential capabilities for developing practical AI agents and assistants for businesses.

According to Writer’s co-founder and CTO, Waseem Alshikh, Palmyra X 004 enables AI to execute multiple functions and actions simultaneously, paving the way for automating complex enterprise workflows. This shift from AI assistants that provide information to systems that can perform tasks marks a crucial development in the AI industry.

Palmyra X 004 stands out for its exceptional performance on function calling tasks, achieving a score of 78.76% on Berkeley’s Tool Calling Leaderboard, surpassing offerings from tech giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta by nearly 20%. Additionally, the model ranked in the top 10 on Stanford University’s Holistic Evaluation of Language Models (HELM) benchmark, showcasing strong general language understanding and reasoning abilities across various subjects.

Despite containing only around 150 billion parameters, much smaller than other rumored models with trillions of parameters, Writer’s Palmyra X 004 has proven to be highly capable. The company attributes this efficiency to its innovative use of synthetic data and a proprietary early stopping mechanism during training, demonstrating that high-performing models can be built without exorbitant training costs.

Furthermore, Palmyra X 004 boasts multilingual and multimodal capabilities, supporting over 30 languages and handling text, images, and audio inputs. Writer offers multiple deployment options for the model, including access through their API, deployment via cloud providers like AWS SageMaker and Nvidia AI Enterprise, or hosting on-premises within a company’s infrastructure – addressing concerns around data privacy and control.

Looking ahead, Writer envisions deeper, smarter, and more efficient AI models, with a focus on improving reasoning capabilities while maintaining low inference costs. The company emphasizes AI safety and control, integrating features like automatic data integration with retrieval augmented generation (RAG) and source transparency to address concerns around reliability and governance.

In conclusion, as businesses explore the potential of generative AI, models like Palmyra X 004 could play a pivotal role in realizing the promise of AI-driven workflow automation. By prioritizing efficiency, ease of deployment, and real-world business applications, Writer is carving out a unique path in the enterprise AI market, positioning itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
