WiLDAF Tanzania: Leading the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence
During the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, Generation Equality is shining a spotlight on commitment makers who are actively working to end gender-based violence. WiLDAF Tanzania, a prominent organization dedicated to eradicating gender-based violence and empowering women and girls, is at the forefront of this important mission. Through their advocacy efforts and community initiatives, WiLDAF is making a significant impact on Tanzania’s social and political landscape.
In Tanzania, WiLDAF is actively working to champion the safety, rights, and empowerment of women and girls. As a strong advocate for women’s rights, WiLDAF is influencing government priorities to prioritize gender equality and social inclusion in national policies, programs, and budgets. Their work extends beyond the government to local communities, where they are helping to foster a culture of gender equality and social justice.
One of WiLDAF’s key initiatives is the National Plan of Action to End Violence Against Women and Children. Through this program, WiLDAF has established local committees across the country to empower women to report gender-based violence and seek justice. By breaking the silence surrounding GBV and providing support to survivors, WiLDAF is making a tangible difference in the lives of women and girls in Tanzania.
In addition to their advocacy work, WiLDAF is also focused on providing women with the tools they need to build sustainable livelihoods. Through vocational training, startup grants, and small business resources, WiLDAF has helped over 200 women launch small businesses in 2023, promoting financial independence and resilience within their families. Initiatives like the Jamii Imara Project are also making a significant impact by offering alternative income sources and engaging men, traditional leaders, and religious actors in promoting gender equality.
WiLDAF’s advocacy efforts extend into political and legal reform as well. The organization played a key role in advocating for measures to address violence against women during elections in Tanzania, ensuring safe political spaces for women leaders. Additionally, WiLDAF has partnered with UNFPA and the Government of Finland to launch the “My Choice My Rights” Program, which aims to protect the rights of women and girls, particularly those with disabilities, against GBV, harmful practices, and early marriage.
As Tanzania’s Generation Equality Commitment aligns with WiLDAF’s mission, the organization continues to lead by example in promoting gender equality and women’s rights. Through their dedication to expanding women’s economic opportunities, strengthening care services, and promoting gender-responsive policies, WiLDAF is making a lasting impact on Tanzania’s future.
As we observe the 16 Days of Activism, WiLDAF’s work serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of advancing gender justice and empowering women and girls to live free from violence. By reshaping Tanzania’s social landscape and inspiring a movement across East Africa, WiLDAF is paving the way for a future where equality and opportunity are accessible to all.
