Kenya’s President William Ruto is throwing his support behind former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid to chair the African Union Commission (AUC) in a move to push for reforms within the continental body.
During the official launch of Raila’s candidacy for the top position at the African Union, Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, emphasized Kenya’s commitment to pushing for reforms at the AU. He highlighted Raila’s alignment with the philosophy of reform and his extensive leadership experience as key factors that make him the ideal candidate for the role.
Mudavadi stated, “We presently need a candid audit of the AU’s progress in order to spur our regional body into an organisation that continues to serve the African people and one that cultivates mutually beneficial partnerships. Kenya is offering a lifelong Pan-Africanist, an accomplished global statesman, who has demonstrated exceptional and visionary leadership.”
Raila Odinga, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, has previously served as Prime Minister and has played a significant role in national and regional peace and security initiatives. Despite facing defeat in multiple presidential elections, Raila has always prioritized unity and stability, showcasing his peacemaking skills and strategic patience.
President Ruto expressed his belief that having a Kenyan leader at the helm of the AUC would enhance efforts to drive AU reform goals effectively. He emphasized the importance of Africa organizing itself and building synergies to address the continent’s challenges, stating that the reform agenda of AU institutions must be thorough and consultative.
President Ruto, who was appointed the African Union Champion for Institutional Reform in February, has been tasked with providing political leadership and vision to complete the Comprehensive Institutional Reform Initiative initiated in 2016. The objective is to make AU institutions more accountable, efficient, and effective in serving member States and the African people.
By endorsing Raila Odinga’s candidacy for AUC chairperson, President Ruto aims to align the vision and priorities of the Commission with the ongoing reform efforts. With Raila’s leadership, it is hoped that the AU will be able to achieve various reforms and enhance its effectiveness in managing continental programs.
Overall, the collaboration between President Ruto and Raila Odinga signifies Kenya’s commitment to promoting positive change within the African Union and working towards a more cohesive and prosperous continent.
