Mpho Mkumbeni’s Death: Four Prison Wardens Arrested for Alleged Inmate Murder

It has been a shocking turn of events at the Mangaung Correctional Centre as four prison wardens from the G4S facility have been arrested for the alleged murder of an inmate. The inmate in question, 38-year-old Mpho Mkumbeni, had been serving a life sentence for murder and had been at the correctional centre since 2014.

Arrest and Investigation

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele revealed that Mkumbeni passed away at the facility on 12th March. Initially, his death was thought to be from natural causes, leading to the opening of an inquest docket. However, post-mortem results later indicated that his death was due to unnatural causes, prompting a shift to a murder investigation.

Court Appearance

The four wardens, aged between 34 and 50, have been charged in connection with Mkumbeni’s death. They are set to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court for their alleged involvement in the inmate’s murder.

Cell Raid and Post-Mortem Findings

Mkumbeni’s death followed an unauthorized raid of his cell, where he was reportedly pepper-sprayed and beaten. These actions led to complications from pepper spray exposure and blunt force trauma, ultimately resulting in his death. The Department of Correctional Services launched a thorough investigation into the incident after conflicting reports emerged.

The investigation revealed that Mkumbeni and his cellmates were accused of stealing money from a member of the dedicated search team (DST) during the raid. Subsequent interrogations, alleged assaults, and torture over the missing money ultimately led to Mkumbeni’s tragic demise.

Senior managers, who were supposed to oversee the search and intervene in case of any misconduct, failed to act appropriately. This failure to provide oversight resulted in the escalation of the case from an inquest to a murder investigation by the South African Police Service.

The case has sent shockwaves through the correctional facility, highlighting the importance of proper protocols and supervision in ensuring the safety and well-being of inmates. The pursuit of justice for Mkumbeni’s death remains a top priority for law enforcement authorities.
