Ambassador Lamora Reinforces U.S. Commitment to Cameroon During Southwest Region Visit

From April 24–27, Ambassador Christopher J. Lamora undertook his third visit to the Southwest Region of Cameroon, reaffirming the U.S. Embassy’s unwavering support for peace, prosperity, and partnership with the country. The visit highlighted the enduring friendship between the American and Cameroonian people, with a focus on engagements with the Paramount Chiefs of Limbe and Buea, as well as participation in the Cameroon International Film Festival (CAMIFF).

Advancing Peace and Stability

During discussions with the Governor of the Southwest Region, Ambassador Lamora stressed the significance of peace and stability in fostering sustainable development. He commended the government’s efforts to enhance the living conditions of citizens in major towns in the region. The Ambassador also visited the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) Center in Tiko, where he learned about the center’s initiatives to reintegrate ex-combatants through vocational training and moral education. Additionally, his visit to the Man O’War Base in Limbe provided insights into the professionalization of Cameroon’s Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) and its commitment to upholding human rights standards.

Strengthening Economic Relations

At the Port Authority of Limbe, discussions centered around infrastructure projects, including the potential expansion of the Port of Limbe to accommodate larger vessels and boost trade opportunities in the region. Ambassador Lamora also engaged with entrepreneurs from “Silicon Mountain” in Buea, exploring avenues for collaboration in the tech sector. The visit to CAMIFF further highlighted the economic and cultural ties between Cameroon and the United States through the film industry.

Community-Led Development Initiatives

Ambassador Lamora met with the Paramount Chiefs of Buea and Limbe to discuss community-driven initiatives such as waste management and workforce development. He also visited the Limbe Wildlife Center, applauding its conservation efforts and contributions to public health education. The Ambassador’s support for local initiatives underscores the importance of community-led development in Cameroon.

U.S. Commitment to Health Security

During his visit to Mutengene Baptist Hospital, Ambassador Lamora witnessed the impact of U.S. investments in HIV and TB care through programs like the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The hospital, serving over 122,000 patients annually, stands as a testament to the United States’ commitment to strengthening health security in Cameroon.

This visit showcased the evolving opportunities for collaboration between the United States and Cameroon in the Southwest Region, emphasizing mutual cooperation and shared goals for a prosperous future.
