Ukrainian troops have reportedly launched a second counter-incursion into Russia, following the loss of control over Kursk. The incursion is said to be targeting the Belgorod region, just south of Kursk, with more than 20 villages coming under attack by Ukrainian soldiers, missiles, and drones.
While Ukrainian officials have not provided detailed information about the incursion, President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned that Kyiv has taken “certain steps” in a region below Kursk to divide Russia’s forces. This move mirrors last year’s tactics in Kursk, where Ukrainian troops seized control of villages to divert Russian soldiers away from the frontlines.
After Russia regained control of most of Kursk with the assistance of North Korean soldiers, Ukrainian National Defense and Security Council official Andril Kovalenko hinted at a possible strike in the Belgorod region to disrupt the Kremlin’s forces. Reports indicate that Ukrainian troops have made some advances in Belgorod, particularly in the village of Popovka where heavy fighting is ongoing.
Russian military bloggers are providing insights into the situation on the ground, as independent news outlets are not embedded in the combat zones. They have reported that Russian forces from Kursk are being deployed to reinforce Belgorod in response to the incursion.
However, some military analysts are skeptical about the success of the Ukrainian assault in Belgorod. Emil Kastehelmi from the Black Bird Group expressed concerns that the incursion may not lead to significant gains, as the element of surprise is lacking, and Russian presence in the area is strong enough to mount successful defensive operations.
The escalation comes amid stalled cease-fire talks between the US, Russia, and Ukraine, with accusations of violations on both sides regarding attacks on energy facilities. The Kremlin stated that Russia reserves the right to retaliate against Kyiv for violating the moratorium on attacking the energy sector.
As the situation unfolds, the outcome of the second incursion into Russia remains uncertain, with potential implications for the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The developments highlight the complex dynamics at play in the region and the challenges of reaching a peaceful resolution.
