Drug trafficking is a serious issue in South Africa, especially at OR Tambo International Airport. Last year, there were several cases of drug trafficking suspects being intercepted at the airport. In one incident, a 21-year-old South African woman was found to have expelled 110 drug bullets following her arrest, the highest number discovered in eight years. She was arrested during a joint operation between SAPS and SARS Customs after arriving on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil. Additionally, a 30-year-old Namibian drug mule was arrested after expelling over 60 drug bullets upon arrival from São Paulo. Another Nigerian drug mule was also arrested for drug trafficking after being found with cocaine concealed in aircraft headphones upon landing from São Paulo.
The National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, commended the vigilance of SARS and SAPS members at the airport for their efforts in combating drug trafficking. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders to assert state authority at all ports of entry and squeeze the space for criminals. Drug traffickers are facing increased scrutiny and pressure, with law enforcement agencies working diligently to apprehend those involved in illegal activities. The dedication and hard work of law enforcement officers are crucial in ensuring the safety and security of South Africa’s borders.
