Two Mozambican fugitives arrested in Mpumalanga for possible connection to Christmas Day prison breakout

Two Mozambican fugitives, suspected to have escaped prison during a mass breakout on Christmas Day, were apprehended in Malelane, Mpumalanga. The suspects, aged 25 and 33, were arrested by members of Polsec on Sunday evening due to their lack of documentation to be in South Africa.

The escape of over 1,500 prisoners from Maputo Central Prison on Christmas Day in 2024 occurred amidst national protests following Mozambique’s Constitutional Court confirming Daniel Chapo as the next president. The suspects are believed to be part of this group that escaped from custody in Mozambique.

The South African Police Service (Saps) collaborated with various partners including the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Crime Intelligence, and Interpol in handling the case. Following validations, the suspects were charged for contravening the Immigration Act of South Africa.

Fugitives to face court proceedings

The suspects are set to appear in court soon as the investigation progresses. Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, acting provincial commissioner of the Saps, commended all law enforcement agencies involved in the apprehension of the fugitives.

General Mkhwanazi highlighted the importance of partnership and commitment among law enforcement agencies in combating crime. He emphasized the need for a holistic approach in addressing criminal activities, with participation from all sectors being essential in crime prevention.
