Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is facing serious legal challenges as he has been formally charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault by the UK’s Metropolitan Police. The charges stem from alleged incidents involving three women and have come after a three-year investigation.
The 32-year-old Ghanaian international, who recently left Arsenal after his contract expired on June 30, 2025, is set to appear before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5, 2025, to face the charges. The charges include two counts of rape involving one woman, three counts of rape involving a second woman, and one count of sexual assault involving a third woman. These alleged offenses are said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022, while Partey was still playing for Arsenal.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that the charges were brought after a thorough review of evidence gathered during the investigation, which began in February 2022 following a report of rape. Partey was initially arrested in July 2022 but remained on bail and continued to play for Arsenal during the ongoing legal proceedings.
Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman and Rose, issued a statement asserting Partey’s denial of all charges and his full cooperation with the authorities. Due to the ongoing legal proceedings, Partey is unable to comment further on the matter.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, emphasized the Metropolitan Police’s commitment to supporting the alleged victims and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Thomas Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 and had a successful spell at the club, making 167 appearances and scoring 9 goals. Despite injury setbacks, he played a crucial role in Arsenal’s campaigns, including their run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. In June 2025, he was named Ghana Footballer of the Year, but contract renewal talks with Arsenal reportedly broke down, leading to his release.
Currently without a club, Partey is believed to be training privately in Ghana as he considers his next move. His legal situation is likely to have a significant impact on any potential transfer or contract negotiations in the future.
