The recent fire at Tembisa Hospital’s accident and emergency unit (casualty) has caused concern, but patients can rest assured that health services will continue to be provided at the facility. Despite the devastation caused by the fire, all other units at the hospital remain operational thanks to a continuity plan implemented by Gauteng health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.
After conducting a walk-through of the burnt-down unit, Nkomo-Ralehoko confirmed that all 81 patients in the casualty unit at the time of the fire were unharmed. Some were transferred to different wards within Tembisa Hospital, while others were moved to other hospitals in the province. Seven patients left the hospital on their own, while 50 were admitted to the hospital’s antenatal unit.
The MEC reported that two patients were sent to the intensive care unit, one to high care, and four were discharged. Additionally, six patients were transferred to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, four to Edenvale Hospital, three to Steve Biko Academic Hospital, and four to Tshwane District Hospital. Fortunately, the 14 nurses, six doctors, and six security guards on duty at the time of the fire were unharmed.
Despite the tragic incident, families can still visit their loved ones at the hospital as usual, as the fire did not impact other wards. Emergency services are still available, with ambulance services diverted to only attend to walk-in emergencies. Acutely ill patients, mother and child services, mental health care, and treatment for chronic diseases will continue to be provided to patients in need.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with teams from various agencies working to determine the source of the blaze. Nkomo-Ralehoko will be closely monitoring operations at Tembisa Hospital in the coming week, although no specific timeline has been provided for the release of the forensic report. Concerned individuals are encouraged to contact 011 923 2000 for any inquiries.
Despite the challenges faced by Tembisa Hospital, the healthcare facility remains committed to providing essential services to the community. The dedication of healthcare workers and the support of the public will ensure that patients continue to receive the care they need during this difficult time.
