The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s TCC International Centre for Innovation, Manufacturing, Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TCC-CIMET), in partnership with the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) and supported by German collaborators, has successfully organized an International Quality Management Workshop for young engineers.

The two-day event brought together young engineering professionals and managers from diverse industrial sectors, introducing them to both fundamental and advanced concepts, including internationally recognized quality definitions and requirements.

Speaking at the workshop, the facilitator, Mrs. Matilda Freda Marful, an internationally acclaimed expert in quality management, outlined the key areas of focus.

“The participants were introduced to quality management models such as ISO 9001:2015, continuous improvement strategies, value stream mapping, and process landscape design. They also received practical guidance on how these frameworks could be adapted to the unique operational realities of Ghanaian industries,” she said.

Mrs. Marful further explained the interactive approach used in delivering the training.

“The training adopted a highly interactive format, combining structured lectures with real-world case study analysis, group discussions, and collaborative exercises. This participatory approach encouraged active engagement, critical reflection, and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. We also had a group project segment, where participants applied value stream and process mapping tools to analyse the workflows of their own organizations. These exercises resulted in insightful group presentations, during which participants outlined key operational processes, identified efficiency gaps, and proposed context-specific improvement strategies,” she added.

The workshop forms part of TCC-CIMET and GhIE’s broader mission to drive institutional excellence, promote professional capacity building, and align Ghana’s engineering practice with globally recognized quality management and assurance standards.

Executive Director of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ing. David Kwatia Nyante, highlighted the critical role that young engineers play in shaping sustainable, high-performing institutions.

“This training is very important to every organization, but even more so for you young engineers. You are critical to the growth and development of every institution. The knowledge and skills you have gained here should not end in this room. I entreat you to carry them forward into your workplaces, applying them in ways that drive innovation, improve efficiency, and create lasting impact. When you commit to turning these lessons into practice, you not only strengthen your organizations but also contribute to building a culture of excellence that Ghana urgently needs,” he said.

Some participants emphasized the workshop’s practical value and relevance to industry.

“The workshop was an eye-opening experience. The practical orientation, combined with the facilitator’s expertise and the collaborative sessions, has given us tools and techniques that we can immediately apply within our organizations to improve efficiency, quality, and competitiveness,” one attendee remarked.

The success of this initiative reinforces TCC-CIMET’s leadership in promoting quality advancement and its contribution to shaping a new generation of engineers who are resilient, innovative, and globally competitive. As the Centre continues to expand its portfolio of capacity-building programmes, collaborations with GhIE and international partners will remain crucial in driving Ghana’s engineering sector toward sustainable excellence.

The workshop concluded with Ing. David Kwatia Nyante and Mrs. Matilda Marful presenting internationally recognized certificates to all participants.
