The Super Bowl is an event that captures the attention of millions of viewers every year. This year’s matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles promises to be a thrilling game, with emotions running high on both sides of the field and in living rooms across the country.

However, what many viewers may not realize is that watching the Super Bowl can actually increase the risk of having a heart attack. Research has shown that cardiac incidents tend to increase around major sporting events like the Super Bowl, especially in the hometown city of the losing team. A recent study found that psychological stress, such as the disappointment of your favorite team losing, can be associated with serious heart issues like heart attacks, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death.

Dr. Brett A. Sealove, a cardiologist at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, explains that stress can exacerbate pre-existing heart conditions, putting individuals with risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity at an increased risk for cardiac events. Strong emotions can impact the body’s hormones and nervous system, affecting blood vessels and increasing the likelihood of dangerous blockages in the heart.

In addition to the emotional stress of the game, the foods typically consumed during the Super Bowl can also contribute to the risk of heart issues. High-fat, high-salt, and high-sugar foods, along with excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, can all strain the heart and increase the chances of a cardiac incident. Dr. Sealove advises individuals to be mindful of their symptoms and not dismiss signs like chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea, as they could indicate a serious heart problem.

To reduce the risk of heart issues, individuals with risk factors should consider making dietary changes, opting for healthier snacks and drinks, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. This Super Bowl Sunday, it’s important to prioritize heart health and take simple steps to protect against cardiac incidents. Remember, while the Super Bowl may be an exciting event, it’s essential to prioritize your health above all else.

As we gear up for the big game, let’s keep in mind the importance of heart health and take care of ourselves while enjoying the excitement of the Super Bowl. Remember, it’s just a game, but your health is invaluable.
