Lassa fever, a deadly virus spread by a rodent called the multimammate rat, claimed a life in Iowa recently. This virus, endemic to West Africa, causes Ebola-like symptoms in some patients and leads to hundreds of thousands of infections and thousands of deaths every year in the region. While rare in the U.S., Iowa health officials reported a death from Lassa fever in a person who had recently traveled to West Africa.

In other news, a study published in JAMA Pediatrics revealed the positive impact of eviction lawyers on reducing preterm births and low birth weights. The program, implemented in certain New York City ZIP codes, led to a significant decrease in adverse birth outcomes, with 600 fewer cases each year. The findings highlight the potential public health benefits of providing legal support to tenants facing eviction, especially in communities already at high risk for poor birth outcomes.

Former President Trump’s recent comments on vaccine safety and his endorsement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his vaccine skepticism, have stirred controversy. While Trump acknowledged the importance of vaccines like the polio vaccine, his association with RFK Jr. raises concerns among GOP officials and industry executives. On a surprising note, not all ultra-processed foods are harmful to health. A study by researcher JoAnn Manson found that certain types of ultra-processed foods are linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The diversity among these foods complicates the understanding of their impact on health outcomes, challenging the notion that all ultra-processed foods are detrimental.

Furthermore, physician Neil Stollman’s advocacy for continued access to fecal transplants for patients with C. diff infections sheds light on the potential threat facing this unconventional but effective treatment. The FDA’s approval of biotherapeutic products for C. diff patients excludes severe, fulminant, and pediatric cases, raising concerns about access to this life-saving therapy for vulnerable populations.

In conclusion, staying informed about health and medicine is crucial in navigating the complexities of healthcare. From rare viruses like Lassa fever to the impact of eviction lawyers on birth outcomes, understanding these key issues can lead to better health outcomes for individuals and communities.
