British Prime Minister Calls for Fast-Tracking of Football Governance Bill
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged Parliament to fast-track the Football Governance Bill into English law amid renewed concerns over a potential breakaway European Super League.
Recent reports suggest that promoters A22 have reached out to UEFA and FIFA with a proposal for a new competition, the Unify League, involving four leagues and 96 teams. This move mirrors the failed Super League initiative from 2021, which faced backlash and opposition from fans and football authorities.
As a dedicated Arsenal fan, Starmer is committed to preventing any Premier League club from participating in similar controversial ventures. The proposed Football Governance Bill seeks to establish an independent regulator for the top five tiers of English men’s football.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s spokesperson:
“Under Keir Starmer’s leadership, there will be no repeat of a Super League-style breakaway. The enhanced Football Governance Bill will grant authority to the regulator to prohibit English clubs from entering breakaway competitions, taking into account factors such as sustainability, tradition, and equity.”
Starmer emphasizes the importance of expediting the passage of the Bill to preserve the integrity of English football and implement crucial reforms throughout the football hierarchy.
