Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Juarno Augustus are set to continue the tradition of South African players featuring in the Champions Cup final as Northampton Saints take on Bordeaux in Cardiff this Saturday. Augustus, the former Stormers No 8, has been in stellar form for Northampton Saints this season, scoring five tries in five Champions Cup appearances. On the other hand, Janse van Rensburg, the powerful centre for Bordeaux, has found the try line four times in his last six games.

The clash between these two South African stars promises to be an exciting one, with Janse van Rensburg likely to come up against Augustus in the Cardiff showdown. Both players will be looking to make a significant impact and help their respective teams lift the prestigious European club rugby crown.

Looking back at previous Champions Cup finals, South African players have left their mark on the competition. In 2015, legends like Bakkies Botha, Bryan Habana, and Juan Smith played a crucial role in Toulon’s victory over Clermont. Saracens, with the likes of Schalk Brits, Michael Rhodes, and Petrus du Plessis, secured back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.

In 2018, Leinster emerged victorious in a tactical battle against Racing 92, while Saracens reclaimed the title in 2019 with the help of Schalk Burger and Vincent Koch. Exeter Chiefs clinched their maiden Champions Cup crown in 2020, with Jacques Vermeulen and Jannes Kirsten playing key roles in the final.

Toulouse’s triumph in 2021 saw Springbok stars Cheslin Kolbe and Rynhardt Elstadt shine on the big stage, while La Rochelle claimed their first Champions Cup trophy in 2022 with a win over Leinster. In a thrilling rematch in 2023, La Rochelle edged out Leinster to defend their title in a nail-biting contest.

The most recent final in 2024 saw Toulouse emerge victorious against Leinster in a closely contested match that went into extra time. With South African lock Jason Jenkins featuring for Leinster, Toulouse secured their sixth Champions Cup crown with a hard-fought win.

As we look ahead to the upcoming final between Northampton Saints and Bordeaux, the presence of Augustus and Janse van Rensburg adds an exciting dynamic to the clash. South African rugby fans will be eager to see these two talented players showcase their skills on the European stage and potentially add their names to the list of Champions Cup winners.
