Siemens AG Partners with Miko Pharma to Develop Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facilities in Ghana

Siemens, a global technology leader, has recently signed a groundbreaking agreement with Miko Pharma to establish cutting-edge pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in Ghana. This partnership aims to create 130 jobs and produce affordable, high-quality medications for various ailments, contributing to the expansion of Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector.

The agreement, finalized at the prestigious Hannover Messe trade show in Germany, signifies a significant milestone in Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry. Siemens will be responsible for developing industrial applications, buildings, infrastructure, and utilities for Miko Pharma’s operations in Eastern Ghana, ensuring compliance with World Health Organization standards.

Sabine Dall’Omo, CEO of Siemens Sub-Saharan Africa, expressed the company’s commitment to enabling the local manufacture of safe pharmaceutical drugs in Africa. By leveraging advanced technology and expertise, Siemens aims to support the creation of a sustainable and self-sufficient pharmaceutical industry in Ghana.

Dr. Michael Obeng, CEO of Miko Pharma, emphasized the importance of the partnership in enhancing healthcare accessibility in the region. Miko Pharma plans to manufacture affordable and effective medications for conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, malaria, and pain, addressing critical healthcare needs in Ghana.

Mr. Willard Jackson, Executive Director for Miko Pharma, highlighted the transformative impact of the partnership with Siemens on healthcare in Ghana. By establishing state-of-the-art facilities, the collaboration seeks to set a new standard for pharmaceutical production in Africa, delivering high-quality medications and creating employment opportunities.

The pharmaceutical industry in Ghana is a growing contributor to the economy, with local production meeting 30% of demand. The Ghana Food and Drugs Authority has licensed 36 pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, indicating a thriving sector. Pharmaceutical sales in Ghana reached GHS6.6 billion in 2023 and are projected to grow to GH₵10.7 billion by 2028, driven by increased consumption of generic medicines.

The Siemens-Miko Pharma partnership has the potential to significantly boost the local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, surpassing economic forecasts.
