Merck Foundation recently announced the winners of the prestigious Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit (MARS) Awards 2024. This initiative recognizes the outstanding contributions of African researchers in empowering women and youth in STEM fields, with a special focus on the role of scientific research in women’s health and reproductive care. The awards were presented in partnership with key organizations such as the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS), Africa Reproductive Care Society (ARCS), Manipal University, and the African Union Scientific Technical Research Commission.
Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and Chairperson of MARS, highlighted the importance of celebrating the achievements of African researchers, particularly women who are often underrepresented in the field. The winners of the Best African Women Researchers Awards and Best Young African Researchers Awards will receive research training at a premier institute in India.
The winners of the MARS Awards 2024 include Nompumelelo Lebogang Malaza from South Africa, Dorotheah Obiri from Ghana, Jules Irenge Mongane from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Christian Chassem Lapue from Gabon, and Gebrhud Berihu Haile from Ethiopia. Their research topics cover a wide range of issues related to women’s health, reproductive care, and neonatal mortality.
In addition to recognizing the achievements of these researchers, Merck Foundation also announced the Call for Applications for the new edition of the MARS Awards 2025. The focus for the upcoming awards will once again be on the role of scientific research in women’s health and reproductive care. Final year African PhD students and young investigators are invited to submit abstracts related to women’s health, infertility, and reproductive health.
Applications for the MARS Awards 2025 can be submitted until 30th June 2025. The winners will have the opportunity to receive research training at a prestigious institute in India and attend the 12th Edition of the Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary 2025. The awards aim to encourage and support women researchers in Africa, empowering them to make significant contributions to scientific research in their respective fields.
