Sangoma: It’s not always witchcraft and curses

Sangoma Fezile Pretorius of Heavenly Healing often encounters clients who are facing challenges in their work environment or with their neighbors. These individuals often feel drained, experience tension at work, broken sleep, and an overall sense of something being amiss. Oftentimes, they start to suspect that they may have been targeted with muti or that a spell or curse has been cast upon them.

However, Pretorius emphasizes that not all spiritual unease is caused by external forces. Many times, individuals create their own sense of spiritual unease due to internal factors such as guilt or negative emotions towards others. This self-imposed negativity can manifest into a belief that they are under spiritual attack, even though nothing external has been done to them.

While muti can be used for both positive and negative purposes, Pretorius explains that it primarily works on three levels: physical, mental, and subconscious. In cases of neighborhood disputes or workplace conflicts, muti can be used to bring peace and harmony to the individual using it, rather than causing harm to others.

However, curses and spells do exist, as Pretorius discovered during a consultation where the bones confirmed that a client was indeed under spiritual interference. The source of the disturbance was jealousy and resentment from someone nearby who felt envious of the client’s success and wellbeing. The weak muti used in this case still had an impact due to the strong negative intentions behind it.

To address the spiritual interference, the bones suggested a cleansing ritual for the client’s home environment followed by a ritual of thanks to acknowledge their blessings and shift their focus towards gratitude and clarity. By anchoring themselves spiritually and showing gratitude instead of fear or retaliation, the client could often resolve the situation peacefully.

Pretorius advises consulting one’s ancestors before jumping to conclusions about ill intentions from others, as the bones will reveal the truth. In many cases, the real battle lies within ourselves, with our own fears and negative emotions creating the spiritual unease we experience. By addressing these internal conflicts and shifting our focus towards positivity, we can often resolve external challenges without escalating the situation.
