Sam’s Club, a popular membership warehouse owned by Walmart, is making significant changes to its grocery payment system by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The retailer is transitioning away from traditional checkouts in its 600 stores to create a seamless shopping experience for customers. This new system will allow customers to scan their items using a mobile app, with an AI scanner verifying the items as they exit the store, eliminating the need for receipt checks at the door.
The “Scan & Go” system was initially introduced in April 2024, allowing members to scan products using the Sam’s Club mobile app. The recent announcement includes the implementation of an AI check, known as “Just Walk”/”Just Go” exit, which will eventually replace traditional checkouts in all stores.
Chris Nicholas, the President and CEO of Sam’s Club, revealed these plans during the company’s 2025 Investment Community Meeting. He emphasized the company’s commitment to growth and innovation, positioning Sam’s Club as a leading club retailer in the industry.
The latest store in Grapevine, Texas, has already implemented the “Just Walk”/”Just Go” system, setting the standard for future stores. This location is designed to enhance the shopping experience by making it faster, smoother, and more enjoyable for customers. Additionally, the store incorporates AI technology to improve the work environment for employees with features like a vertical tire carousel, automated forklifts, and a pizza robot in the café.
By prioritizing human-centered design and technology, Sam’s Club aims to offer customers a glimpse into the future of retail. The company is also focusing on investing in its 100,000 associates, recognizing their importance in driving the company’s success. The adoption of AI tools to streamline tasks has not only improved operational efficiency but also increased associate engagement. Sam’s Club has also made investments in wages and career progression opportunities for its employees.
The integration of new technology will provide associates with more time to enhance the member experience. By fostering positive interactions between associates and members, Sam’s Club aims to build a loyal customer base and create a culture that supports both employees and customers. This customer-centric approach aligns with the company’s vision of becoming the world’s best club retailer.
