Police had been tracking the gang leader and his associates using intelligence as they traveled to Umhlanga, allegedly to acquire drugs and ammunition.
According to KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the suspects changed vehicles after leaving Umhlanga. However, police were able to identify and tail them until they parked on Vincent Dickinson Road in Cottonlands.
As officers approached the suspects’ vehicle, they were met with gunfire, leading to a violent shootout.

The gang leader had a warrant out for his arrest in connection with a murder case. Authorities have linked him to over 20 criminal incidents, including the deaths of more than 10 individuals.
His criminal record also includes charges of attempted murder, robbery, intimidation, and arson. A firearm was recovered from the gang leader’s possession, with further investigation pending on the contents of the suspects’ vehicle.
KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi commended the officers for their relentless pursuit of the main suspect responsible for instigating fear in Inanda, KwaMashu, and neighboring areas.
While Mkhwanazi expressed a preference for capturing the suspect alive to face justice, he emphasized that the suspect’s actions in targeting police officers ultimately determined his fate.
