The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Nigeria, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has been selected to receive the prestigious ‘African Public Service Award’ at the upcoming African Heritage Concert and Awards (AFRIHeritage) in Marrakesh, Morocco.
The AFRIHeritage event, which is set to take place on April 12th at the Savoy Hotel in Marrakesh, follows successful editions held in Kigali, Rwanda, and Lagos, Nigeria, in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
The Public Service Award, which falls under the Social Impact Category, recognizes Dr. Ogbuku’s outstanding leadership in Public Service. One of his most notable achievements is the ‘Lighting Up The Niger Delta’ project, which aims to provide electricity to underserved communities in the oil-rich Niger Delta Region of Nigeria.
Dr. Ogbuku has also shown a strong commitment to empowering young people through scholarships and other transformative programs for their holistic development. His efforts in health outreach have significantly improved access to healthcare for rural communities in need.
Collaborating with the renowned auditing and advisory firm, KPMG, Dr. Ogbuku spearheaded the development of the ‘Governance Advisory Report,’ a strategic plan to transition NDDC from a ‘Transactional to a Transformational Policy’ in line with global best practices.
The AFRIHeritage Awards celebrate distinguished Africans who have excelled in various fields such as Business, Politics, Philanthropy, Entertainment & Arts, Culture, Science & Technology, and Social Innovation. These individuals are honored for their exceptional contributions to the advancement of the African continent.
Other esteemed honorees at the event include His Majesty King Mohammed VI, King of Morocco; Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization; H.E. Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga (MP), Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Community Affairs; Frannie Leautier, CEO of Southbridge Investments, Partners; and Prof. Adesoji Adelaja, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor in Land Policy at Michigan State University (MSU) & Board Chairman of Chapel Hill Denham.
Leading institutions like Standard Bank Group of South Africa, Hassan II University of Casablanca (UH2C) in Morocco, and the Bank of Industry (BOI) will also be recognized for their exceptional contributions to promoting Africa’s image globally.
The event will be attended by previous AfriHeritage Award recipients, including notable figures like HE. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, former President of Nigeria; HE. John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana; HE. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama, former President of Botswana; Professor Patrick Lumumba, a renowned Pan-Africanist and Scholar, as well as captains of industries and top brands from across Africa.
