The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has vehemently refuted the accusations leveled against them by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding an alleged election-rigging scheme. The NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, claimed at a press conference that the NPP, in collusion with Brigadier General Michael Kwadwo Opoku, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, is planning to manipulate the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to Gyamfi, the purported plan includes ballot stuffing, ballot box swapping, pink sheet exchange, and other clandestine activities, with the scheme set to commence during the special voting exercise on 2nd December. He further asserted that this plan was orchestrated in exchange for the position of Chief of Defence Staff in the event that the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emerges victorious in the election.
However, in a counter-press conference the following day, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye (popularly known as Nana B), dismissed these allegations as unfounded and lacking evidence. He instead accused the NDC of plotting to rig the elections themselves.
Nana B revealed information suggesting that the NDC has been training individuals in various communities, including the Obuasi East constituency, under the guise of private security to disrupt the electoral process, particularly in the NPP’s stronghold in the Ashanti region. Additionally, he claimed that the NDC plans to use ambulances to transport weapons to these individuals on election day, as well as deploy individuals on motorbikes to indiscriminately shoot in NPP strongholds to create fear and disrupt the voting process.
The NPP National Organiser also named retired Commissioner of Police Nathan Kofi Boakye as the orchestrator behind the NDC’s alleged election-rigging plot, accusing him of attempting to instigate insecurity on Election Day.
Nana B emphasized the NPP’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful election on 7th December 2024 and condemned the NDC’s actions as an attempt to create unnecessary tension and fear in the Ashanti region, tarnishing the reputation of Brigadier General Opoku and the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces in the process. He labeled the attacks on the integrity of the Armed Forces as reckless and dangerous.
The NPP’s stance is clear – they stand against any form of electoral malpractice and are dedicated to upholding the democratic process in Ghana. With the election day fast approaching, it is essential for all political parties to maintain integrity and respect for the electoral system to ensure a free and fair election.
