An illegal immigrant was apprehended over the weekend for stealing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s expensive Gucci bag, which contained $3,000 in cash and other personal items. The incident occurred while Noem was enjoying an Easter outing with her family at The Capital Burger in Washington, DC, on April 20. The thief, who was wearing a mask, managed to steal the luxury shoulder bag, which also held Noem’s driver’s license, passport, DHS badge, and apartment keys.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed yet, was captured by the DC Metro Police and the Secret Service. It is believed that the perpetrator is part of a larger east coast robbery crew and is expected to appear in court early next week. Authorities are still on the lookout for a second suspect, who is also reported to be an illegal migrant.
DC US Attorney Ed Martin stated that there is no indication that Noem was specifically targeted due to her high-profile position. He mentioned that the thief seemed to be experienced and knew how to carry out the theft effectively. The stolen Gucci bag, valued at $4,400, was left on the ground at Noem’s table when it was taken. Inside the bag was also a Louis Vuitton Clemence Purse, which sells for $600.
Security footage captured a white man wearing a N95 surgical mask, dark pants, a “fur-type” collar, and a ball cap taking Noem’s bag before leaving the restaurant, which is located close to the White House. Noem, who oversees the Secret Service, US Customs and Border Protection, and the Coast Guard, described the incident as shocking and professionally executed.
The Secretary expressed her surprise at how quickly and skillfully the theft was carried out. She emphasized that such incidents are common in certain communities and reaffirmed her commitment to addressing these issues. The Secret Service provides security for high-ranking officials like Noem, but it is unclear if they were present at the restaurant during the robbery.
Noem expressed uncertainty about being targeted due to her role as DHS boss and left it to investigators to determine the thief’s motives. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has also been involved in the case, and Martin assured that the alleged robbers will not be allowed back into the country.
Overall, the theft of Noem’s Gucci bag serves as a reminder of the dangers present in certain communities and the importance of addressing security concerns. DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the incident.
