Manchester United Fans Prefer New Stadium Over Old Trafford Renovation
A recent survey released on Tuesday shows that most Manchester United supporters prefer constructing a new stadium instead of renovating Old Trafford.
The survey, which polled 50,000 season ticket holders, club members, and executive club members, revealed that 52% supported the idea of a new venue, while 31% favored the redevelopment of the iconic Old Trafford. The remaining 17% were undecided on the matter.
Comparisons were drawn with Manchester City, United’s cross-city rival, who moved from Maine Road to the new City of Manchester Stadium in 2003. Similarly, Liverpool, another Premier League club, recently revamped their Anfield stadium.
In September, Manchester United shared artist renderings of a potential Old Trafford renovation project. The club also hinted at the possibility of including a new stadium as part of a multi-billion-pound redevelopment initiative.
The club’s owners are currently in discussions with the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, which includes prominent figures such as former United defender Gary Neville and World Athletics president Sebastian Coe.
The Task Force is currently exploring the possibility of constructing a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000 instead of simply renovating Old Trafford.
Rick McGagh, United’s director of fan engagement, emphasized the importance of fan input in the decision-making process. He stated, “We understand the significance of our home to fans, and it’s crucial for us to listen to their perspectives and collect their insights to create the world-class stadium they deserve.”
McGagh added, “We plan to analyze the survey results from different perspectives to determine if there are varying opinions among season ticket holders, official members, and different age groups of supporters.”
