Arrest Made in Connection with Murder of Teenage Schoolgirl
The South African Police Service (Saps) in Nelspruit have made a significant breakthrough in the case of a 17-year-old schoolgirl who was found murdered in Kanyamazane, Mpumalanga. A 23-year-old man has been arrested and is set to appear in the Kanyamazane District Court to face murder charges.
Disappearance of Matric Teenage Girl Ends in Tragedy
The victim was last seen by her family early Friday morning as she left for school. According to Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the family last saw their daughter on Friday, 14 March 2025, at 05:45, when she was on her way to catch a bus to school.
Police responded to a call reporting an incident at Extension 16, Kanyamazane, at around 17:30 on Friday. Upon arrival, officers encountered the suspect, who initially claimed to be reporting the incident.
The victim’s body was found covered with a duvet, still dressed in her school uniform. A rope was also discovered around her neck, with another piece hanging from the roof.
Police Condemn the Murder of the Teenage Girl
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned the incident, referring to the killing of the young girl as deeply troubling.
Mkhwanazi commended the officers for their swift action in apprehending the suspect. The circumstances surrounding the victim’s death are still under investigation, with the suspect identified as the primary person of interest.
