The city of Johannesburg has been facing a concerning increase in the number of delivery bikes operating unlawfully on its streets, causing traffic obstructions and posing safety risks to pedestrians and motorists. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has taken action by impounding 15 delivery bikes and arresting 10 foreign nationals for violating the Immigration Act.
According to JMPD spokesperson superintendent Xolani Fihla, the operations in the Rosebank area are part of a citywide initiative to ensure traffic safety, compliance with municipal bylaws, and the protection of residents. The delivery bikes have been found to be obstructing traffic, parking illegally, and engaging in reckless driving behaviors such as speeding and ignoring traffic signals.
Many of the riders lack valid driver’s licenses, vehicle license discs, and proper immigration documentation for commercial operations in South Africa. This lack of documentation not only poses safety risks but also raises concerns about accountability and regulatory oversight of these delivery services.
In response to these violations, the JMPD has impounded motorbikes for various violations, including obstruction and lack of licensing. Additionally, one individual was arrested for drug dealing and 10 others for contravening the Immigration Act.
The JMPD’s operations include verifying driver’s licenses, inspecting vehicle license discs, confirming passports and permits for foreign national riders, enforcing parking regulations, addressing unsafe driving behaviors, and addressing any other traffic violations related to delivery bike operations.
The JMPD is urging all delivery bike operators to ensure their documentation is valid and to adopt safe driving practices. It is also calling on companies and delivery platforms to ensure their riders comply with all relevant legislation and prioritize road safety.
The ultimate goal of these operations is to promote a safe, legal, and respectful environment for all residents and visitors of Johannesburg. The JMPD remains committed to monitoring and addressing violations to maintain order and safety across the city.
