Dr Stephen Amoah, a member of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign strategy team, has dismissed the recent show of support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia by over 60 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament, labeling it as “propaganda” and a sign of growing panic within the former Vice President’s camp.
In an interview on JoyFM’s Top Story, Dr Amoah, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, refuted the claims of overwhelming support for Dr Bawumia, stating that the numbers cited do not accurately reflect genuine endorsements. He described the situation as “extremely interesting and funny,” pointing out that the actual number of supporters present at the meeting was likely less than 30.
According to Dr Amoah, many MPs who attended the meeting with Dr Bawumia did so under duress or for appearances, asserting that true support lies elsewhere, particularly among grassroots members and former party appointees. He revealed that more than 260 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) had pledged their support for Kennedy Agyapong on the same day as Bawumia’s MP endorsement.
Dr Amoah claimed that 90% of the former MMDCEs are in favor of Kennedy Agyapong and emphasized that they have evidence to support their claims, including names and contact information. He also accused certain factions within the party of pressuring and intimidating MPs, especially first-time legislators, to publicly endorse Dr Bawumia.
While Dr Amoah did not provide a specific number of MPs supporting Mr Agyapong, he expressed confidence in a strong showing in the upcoming contest, stating that “most of the MPs support Honourable Ken.” He hinted at rising tensions within the NPP ahead of the presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026, suggesting a fiercely competitive internal race is already underway.
The NPP is gearing up for a closely watched presidential primary, with early endorsements and factional disputes setting the stage for a contentious battle for the party’s nomination. As the political landscape continues to evolve, party members are closely monitoring the shifting alliances and allegiances that could shape the outcome of the upcoming election.
