The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has recently announced the launch of its Innovation Facility, a groundbreaking platform and funding mechanism aimed at addressing global migration challenges and improving the overall migration system. This initiative is part of IOM’s strategic approach to innovation and learning, with a focus on leveraging the benefits of migrants and migration to create impactful solutions.
According to IOM Director General Amy Pope, the Innovation Facility will serve as a collaborative space for the development of sustainable solutions by IOM, partners, communities, and migrants themselves. The primary goal of the Facility is to foster partnerships and engage with a global community of change-makers to enhance the reach and effectiveness of migration solutions.
One of the key priorities of the Innovation Facility is to support innovative projects that have a lasting impact on the global migration landscape. From implementing a circular model for electronic waste management in displacement settings in Uganda to developing an ambulatory system for neonatal care in remote parts of Nigeria, there are endless possibilities for innovation in the migration space.
In addition to providing funding, the Facility offers technical support, mentorship, and capacity development through the INCKED @ IOM initiative. This program, developed in collaboration with the UNICEF Office of Innovation, aims to empower innovators to address complex migration challenges using tools such as systems thinking, human-centered design, and business modeling.
The launch of the Innovation Facility coincides with the release of the IOM Knowledge Management Strategy 2024-2028, which aims to strengthen IOM’s knowledge management approach. This strategy ensures that lessons learned and best practices inform decision-making and programming, contributing to enhanced results across the organization.
Overall, the Innovation Facility and Knowledge Management Strategy are key components of the IOM Strategic Plan 2024-2028, which identifies learning and innovation as critical enablers for achieving the organization’s strategic objectives. By fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration, IOM aims to drive transformative solutions to global migration challenges and support pathways for regular migration.
