The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has recently introduced a special visa-on-arrival initiative, allowing international visitors to travel to Ghana without pre-approval between December 1, 2024, and January 15, 2025. This initiative is part of the “December in GH” campaign, which is a key feature of the broader 10-year “Beyond the Return” strategy aimed at positioning Ghana as a top global travel destination.
The main goal of this streamlined visa process is to simplify travel for tourists, making it easier for them to experience Ghana’s vibrant holiday culture, festivals, and events while also boosting international tourism. The government views this initiative as an opportunity to enhance the country’s reputation as an attractive destination for visitors and investors.
Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, Ghana’s Minister of Transport, issued a directive on November 28, 2024, instructing airlines to update their systems to accommodate this new policy. This measure aligns with Ghana’s commitment to building stronger ties with the global African community and fostering cultural and economic connections.
Akwasi Agyeman, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, emphasized the importance of this policy in attracting both the African diaspora and international travelers. He encouraged visitors to take advantage of the visa-on-arrival program to immerse themselves in the “December in GH” festivities.
The “December in GH” campaign, launched in 2019, has quickly become a major highlight on Ghana’s tourism calendar, drawing international travelers to the country’s unique arts, culture, and celebratory events. The introduction of the simplified visa-on-arrival system is expected to further increase participation and accessibility for visitors.
Overall, this initiative reflects Ghana’s ongoing commitment to showcasing its rich heritage, strengthening its global connections, and driving economic growth through tourism. Travelers are encouraged to participate in this program and explore all that Ghana has to offer during the holiday season.
