Police made a significant discovery at the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo when they found two boxes of explosives during routine inspections. The incident led to the arrest of a 37-year-old foreign national who was driving a truck loaded with the explosives. The white truck with Gauteng registration plates was headed to the province, according to investigations.
The suspect was apprehended, and the vehicle was confiscated. The value of the explosives was estimated to be around R300,000. The suspect is set to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court to face charges of illegal possession of explosives.
Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, the Limpopo police commissioner, commended the officials for strengthening security measures at the border posts, leading to the interception of the explosives. Hadebe emphasized the importance of such actions in combating crime and protecting communities.
In a separate incident in Limpopo, a shootout occurred between police and suspects who had robbed a bread delivery truck in Ga-sekgopo village. The suspects fired at the police and fled into the bushes after their vehicle lost control. One suspect was injured in the leg during the exchange of gunfire.
A 30-year-old man was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property, unlicensed firearms, and attempted murder. The police recovered two unlicensed firearms, cellphones, a grinder, a hammer, bags, and clothes. Another suspect was arrested later, and a third firearm was found in Titibe village.
The suspects had targeted a bakery truck delivering bread, robbing the driver and holding them hostage in the bushes. They stole cellphones, money, and tampered with the safe to take an undisclosed amount of money. The suspects will face charges including attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of stolen property in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court.
