Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, who recently resigned as director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, has raised concerns about the future of public health in the United States under the leadership of vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who currently heads the Department of Health and Human Services.
In an interview with ABC News’ “This Week,” Daskalakis expressed apprehension about the direction in which vaccine policies are heading. He warned that only children with underlying conditions may qualify for the COVID-19 vaccine, a decision that goes against established data and could potentially cause harm.
“As a doctor who has taken the Hippocratic oath, I only see harm coming from this policy shift,” Daskalakis stated.
Daskalakis also voiced his fears about the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices, which he believes is moving towards an ideological agenda that aims to undermine vaccination efforts, particularly mRNA vaccines like those developed for COVID-19.
“I do fear that they have other agendas beyond just COVID-19 vaccination,” Daskalakis added.
When asked about the impact of his resignation and the recent departures and firings at the CDC on public health in the U.S., Daskalakis expressed deep concern.
“I have been worried for months about the breakdown of the firewall between science and ideology, which has made it increasingly difficult for me and my colleagues to fulfill our roles effectively,” he explained.
